About Outerlimits
A driving school run from Glenwood, covering the parts of the Wide Bay Burnett that other schools do not reach.
Why The school exists
Driving schools in this part of Queensland work out of Gympie, Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Kingaroy, and most of them stay close to town. If you live at Bauple, Curra, Tiaro, or on a property somewhere in between, a one-hour lesson has meant an hour of someone else's driving on either side of it.
The result is predictable. Learners out here take far longer to get their hours up than learners in town, and some give up on it altogether until they turn 25 and the logbook requirement no longer applies.
Natalie Cumner spent two years organising and booking driving lessons for young people before starting Outerlimits. She heard the same conversation over and over: a family rings around, gets told the school does not travel that far, and stops looking.
Outerlimits is going to service outer areas that currently have no access or limited access to a driving school.
-NATALIE CUMNER . OWNER & INSTRUCTOR
The school is based at Glenwood and travels roughly 120km out from there. Lessons start and finish at your address.
Twelve years of driving experience, before teaching anyone to drive
Ten years of driving buses
10 years worth of professional driving experience before becoming an instructor. Carrying passengers for a living sets a different standard for how you drive.
Two years with neurodivergent students
Two of those years were spent transporting neurodivergent students. If a learner needs instructions given differently, or repeated, that is familiar ground.
A background in support work
Natalie worked in Disability Employment Services, and has trained and scheduled other drivers.
Accredited with TMR
Accredited as a driver trainer with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.
How lessons run
Every lesson starts and finishes at an address that suits you — home, school, work or the shops. You do not need to get yourself into town first.
The car is a modern automatic with dual controls, which means there is a second set of brakes on the instructor's side. A learner can attempt something new without the consequences of getting it wrong.
Outerlimits teaches in an automatic only. A Queensland licence obtained in an automatic restricts you to automatic vehicles until you pass a test in a manual. Worth knowing before you start, particularly if you will need to drive a manual for work or on the farm.
